Some breeds, such as herding breeds, may require 9-10%. Extremely active dogs and breeds, puppies and unneutered dogs should be increased accordingly. With puppies, start at 10% and adjust as needed. No two dogs are alike in their metabolic rates, age, or activity levels. Always keep tabs on your dogs weight, energy and vitality to ensure a healthy weight or growth rate is maintained.

He came from a loving home but the fit with their older dog was not a perfect one and Moz suffered from many health issues that revolved around his diet. He had very dry and itchy skin, loose stools, ear infections and hot spots. He also was very hesitant to eat the food they sent home with him which told me he was smart enough to figure out his food was not working for his body.
Because of my many years in the dog training, day care and canine nutrition field, I was confident I could help him. The recipe below got him started towards true health and once he was detoxed, (it took him 6 months which is longer than most,) he was ready to go! I knew he would never be able to tolerate a dry kibble diet as it caused him discomfort and created various health challenges. With some dogs it is just not possible. So, raw was our answer.
Since I was not keen on preparing his food every day, I tried him on several brands and different formulas. The recommendations I link to above were all successful but ultimately he decided what he liked best! Raw dog food provided Moz with the balanced nutrition he needed, without any of the unwanted, preservatives, fillers and additives commonly found in commercial pet food. Within 6 months of settling on what he enjoyed eating, Moz was a vibrant, healthy and active guy! He loves his food and treats!
While the idea of feeding your dog raw food may seem daunting, it is a manageable and rewarding journey. Yes, it can be more costly than feeding your beloved pet a commercially available kibble. But for us Moz's is no longer suffering, and his vet bills are minimal and routine these days so the extra expense is completely worth it.
1. Improved Digestion: One of the most significant benefits of a raw dog food diet is improved digestion. Dogs are designed to digest raw food, and feeding Moz a diet consisting of raw ingredients alleviated his digestive issues, loose stools and gas.

I often recommend this diet for dogs that have been suffering from food related allergies and when weaning dogs off of medications. Transitioning will usually take about 2 to 4 weeks.
Double Recipe for 2 Feedings per day
Optional: 1/2 cup organic grated apple, 1/4 cup thawed frozen blueberries - add into rice during last 10 minutes of cooking. You may also add turkey, egg, beef, liver (once or twice a week), or cottage cheese for protein.
Supports the caloric needs of a 50 pound dog. Adjust accordingly to maintain, lose or gain weight.
Why Organic?
It has been my experience that many dogs who have been allergy tested and have had a positive result to being allergic to chicken or beef, when fed organic, rarely have problems. It could be that some dogs are sensitive to antibiotics and steroids. Who knows for sure? With organic, you are getting food sources free of these things as well as pesticides! So, don't skimp during detox - it is well worth it.
Things to know
Please understand that during detox your dog may look worse before he/she looks better. Flushing out your dog’s liver is a wonderful thing but for some time now it has been overtaxed. Changes will take place. Hang in there. However, if your dog begins excessively vomiting, has diarrhea for more than two days, stops drinking water, or experiences seizures, please consult your vet right away. These are highly unusual circumstances but you should be aware of them just the same.
